Can a person truly make a living as an Information Architect?
A teacher of mine once said if I wanted to be rich I should choose something I love as my profession and the money would follow. I have always found his advice somewhat ironic because he was a teacher and he loved teaching but robust piles of cash was something he did not seem to have. My teachers poor finances aside, his words have always held a certain element of truth for me. So I always make sure to do something I love. And once I stop loving what I am doing I stop doing what i am doing (say that ten times fast).
Information Architecture is definitely my latest and longest/ mistress. I love her in every way. I love every geeky, uncool, and boring facet of her and I believe that Information Architecture should be practiced with purity. Sure I’m crazy. But my passion produces pristine results that my customers appreciate. In turn, they pay me a livable wage to deliver superior results over and over again. So if you don’t feel you can fall in love with Information Architecture then don’t bother showing up for the dance. If you do, you will just go home lonely unhappy, and without a dime to show for it. Information Architecture only kisses those that truly love her.
